To Your Health

A New Year and a new start. For many a time of resolutions and great expectations. Be a little kinder, lose a few pounds, get to the gym more often, attend more Chamber programs (I couldn’t resist). Whatever your personal goals are for the new year, I wish you the best in exceeding them.

If improving the health and wellness of you and your employees is a priority this year, then I am happy to say that we are rolling out a new program just in time to help you. Our “Healthy Employee Initiative” will kick off on Tuesday, March 4th.
The rising cost of health insurance and the growing confusion over complying with the Affordable Care Act have made health care the number-one issue of concern for employers the past few years. The Healthy Employee Initiative is an attempt clear away the confusion and save you and your employee's money.

The effort is the brainchild of the Chamber’s Health and Wellness Alliance. The Alliance is a segment of Chamber members in the health and wellness field who meet monthly to network with one another and share information with like-minded business people. There are more than 50 businesses in the group with about 20 who participate actively. Their idea is to make their collective knowledge and expertise available to other Chamber members so that we can all make better informed decisions about the health and wellness choices of our most important assets – our employees.

Our program on March 4th hopes to accomplish three things: Educate employers on the ins and outs of the Affordable Care Act, so that you know what’s necessary from a legal compliance perspective; provide information that will help you choose the most appropriate health insurance plan for your employees from a cost/benefit perspective; provide you with information to encourage your employees to lead a healthier lifestyle. In the end, all three points to the same two results – a healthier and more productive workforce and consequently, lower costs for healthcare. A true win-win (ugh, one of my resolutions was to avoid using trite phrases like win-win and out of the box).

Countless studies show that companies that focus on wellness initiatives for their employees consistently achieve the two benefits listed above. However, most of these are larger businesses with the wherewithal to outsource with a wellness provider. This is the beauty of the Chamber’s Healthy Employee Initiative – you don’t need to be a large company. Any size business can benefit from the services and information that will be available to Chamber members.
Here is just a sample of some of the topics you can gain information on: nutrition, exercise programs, choosing a primary-care physician, mental health, utilizing benefits from your health plan, vision and hearing, occupational therapy, workplace safety, and the list goes on. Wouldn't it be great to have access to these resources for both, you and your employees? And you don’t have to be a large company with an HR staff to take advantage of them.

So march forth into a healthy 2014 by marking your calendar for Tuesday, March 4th from 8:00 to 10:30 am at Velocity Sports Performance in Norwood for the kickoff event to this program. More details and an invitation will be coming soon.
Many thanks to the members of the Health and Wellness Alliance co-chaired by Al McCooey, New Horizon Health & Wellness and Adam Goodrich, Marathon Physical Therapy for working to make the NVCC the healthiest Chamber around!
