The Doctor Is In

The medical industry is proliferating here in the Neponset Valley as evidenced by several new businesses that have joined the Chamber of late; Care Central in Stoughton (urgent care), Doctors Express in Dedham (urgent care), HopeHealth (hospice), New England Baptist Hospital (opening an orthopedic center in Dedham) just to name a few. At the same time, we just celebrated the grand opening of Dedham Medical Associates shiny new facility on Route 1 South in Norwood. DMA nearly doubled their space and have added new care offerings as well.

Meanwhile up at Patriot Place, Brigham & Women's Mass General Health is filling up another floor of its state-of-the-art facility in order to accommodate increased demand. Further north in Dedham, Shields MRI is putting the finishing touches on a 66,000 square foot new diagnostic facility next to the Hilton Dedham.

Norwood Hospital is working its way through the planning process that would allow it to add a fourth floor to the Lorusso Building and construct a medical office building along with expanded parking facilities. As part of its outreach, Norwood Hospital will hold a "town meeting" styled community conversation with President, Emily Holliman on Tuesday, June 11th at 6:00 pm at Norwood High School. The meeting will be emceed by Mary Richardson former host of WCVB's Chronicle and currently Community Liaison for Steward Health Care.

Medical office space is clearly a growth-industry in the region, and many communities are adjusting their marketing and zoning strategies to accommodate and encourage such growth. The net results are many - new commercial tax revenue, new jobs and better local access to quality care.

Living so close to Boston has always had the advantage of being on the edge of the world's best medical care. Today that care is creeping into the suburbs, chief among them those of the Neponset Valley.

The more broadly defined Health and Wellness sector is one of the largest in the NVCC's membership comprising about 10% of our members. Many of those members have helped to spearhead a new "Health and Wellness Alliance." This group is open to any business that falls within that category and is interested in meeting like-minded professionals. The Alliance has met twice and is still in its organizational phase, so it's not too late to get onboard (in fact, it never is). The purpose of the Alliance is that Chamber members in the health and wellness industry have a forum to meet regularly to network with one another, share best practices and ideas and, on occasion, offer seminars or programs that are either beneficial to those in the industry or to the general public. There is no cost to be part of the group, other than being a member of the Chamber. Anyone interested in learning more can call me at 781.769.1126 or email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

The next meeting of the group is on Monday, June 17th at 8:30 am at Velocity Sports Performance located at 111 Morgan Drive Norwood - just around the corner from the Chamber.
