Stay Informed with the HRLC

Paid family leave, minimum wage, independent contractor versus employee, exempt versus non-exempt employees, Affordable Care Act, and on and on. If your head is spinning from all of the employee-related issues your business faces, then you should become familiar with the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Human Resources Leadership Council (HRLC).

The HRLC is a group of Chamber members with a wide range of Human Resources expertise that they make available to other members of the Chamber. Let’s face it, most of us simply do not have the time or the inclination to stay current on the ever-changing rules relating to employment issues. However, the penalties that come with being non-compliant on these rules can be stiff and cripple a small business. And ignorance of the regulations is no defense. So it becomes critical for business owners to make sure that they and/or their HR staff are vigilant about remaining up to date on the latest rules and regulations handed to us by state and federal entities.

The most recent gift sent down by the Department of Labor has to do with overtime regulations. The DOL will have the Final Rule going in effect on December 1, 2016. The salaries and overtime for "white collar" Executive, Administrative, Professional, Outside Sales and Computer Employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act will have significant changes that will impact small, large and mid-size businesses. Understanding how this impacts your business is important.

The HRLC will host a Lunch and Learn on Thursday, August 4th to provide an overview of these new regulations. Attorney Ellen Kearns of Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP in Boston will discuss the new salary requirements and issues to be considered by employers. Her expertise in this subject will help assist you in deciding whether to maintain all or just some of your employees in an exempt category. (see below for event details)

Last month the HRLC offered an informative session that helped educate employers about how medical marijuana use can impact employees and how to deal with employees adversely affected by such use. Extremely useful information when it comes to employers deciding what their policy should be regarding medical marijuana use or possession in the workplace.

In May the discussion was on the legal rights of transgender employees and the employer's obligations in complying with the law, including a discussion of practical workplace issues, such as bathroom usage and designation.

These two issues in particular are relatively new to the business community. What better way to stay informed of the law and current best practices than by joining with your fellow community business leaders for an open discussion about how to do right by your business and your employees.
Most HRLC sessions are held at the Chamber office and are free and open to all. I encourage you to participate yourself or share this with the most appropriate person in your business.

The HRLC is led by Will Krasnow, Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) and Wendy Duggan, PeopleSpan (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)). All members are welcome to participate in HRLC programming. If you would like to assist in planning future information sessions, please contact either Will or Wendy.
