And the Winner Is…

One of the highlights of the year for the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce is our Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner. Each year, we take a moment to recognize those businesses and business people who stand out for their contributions back to the community, their employees and to the Chamber. The good news is there are so many recipients worthy of recognition. The challenge lies in identifying them. This is where we need your help.

Nominations are now open for our 2013 awards. I urge you to think about the businesses and business leaders you know in the Chamber and consider who is worthy of recognition. Incidentally, you may nominate your own business or employee. We will present the following awards at our Annual Meeting in January: Large Business of the Year, Small Business (fewer than 50 employees) of the Year, Business Person of the Year and the Paul Smith Award for Outstanding Volunteerism.

You may wonder what characteristics are important for nomination. Typically, we honor those who have contributed one or more of the following: Added employees, expanded facilities, contributed human (volunteers) and/or financial (grants, sponsorship) resources to local non-profits, demonstrated corporate social responsibility, is innovative and treats its employees well.

The reality is that many of our members are doing much of this but doing so under the radar. We hope to shine a light on those companies who are doing well by doing good. Too often business is maligned in the media and elsewhere. However, the fact is, business is human and does so much more for its employees, the community and the economy than it’s given credit for. Our awards ceremony doesn’t just recognize the winners, it reminds us all that business and business people are making a difference in our communities.
Last year, we honored Central Motors (Large Business), Norwood Town Manager, John Carroll (Business Person), Doc Shredding (Small Business) and Rebecca Schofield, Needham Bank (Volunteer). Who will it be this year? It’s up to you. Please let us know what you think by completing the Nomination Form today and let us know who’s doing great things in our community.

The Annual Meeting is on Thursday, January 23rd at the Four Points Sheraton. Our guest speaker is Sam Kennedy, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Boston Red Sox. That’s right our VP of Programming and Communications, Cristoff Shay looked into his crystal ball back in May and booked Kennedy, knowing that our Red Sox would be in the World Series!
